Crosston Dance Ball

February 9th, 2013

History Club of Los Gatos, 123 Los Gatos Blvd., Los Gatos, CA

Dancers, musicians, & merry-makers of the Shire of Crosston invite you to bid farewell to flesh and celebrate Carnevale. We will dance from day through the candlelit evening, with pauses for refreshment and singing, & you are encouraged to don a mask to add to the mystery. In 1463, the Venetian mask-maker’s guild was established, and by the 16th century, masks were so popular that they were worn for Carnevale from December 26 until Lent. Masks were also worn during the festival of Ascension, to commemorate the marriage of Venice to the sea. That mask-wearing period began 30 days after Easter and lasted until June. So about half the year could be spent masked!

Learn more about Carnevale masks in the 16th century.

Between dance classes & the masked ball, we will sit for a potluck dinner.  Please bring a dish to share. Period food is encouraged, but period-esque and not-totally-modern food is perfectly fine.
--If your SCA name starts with A to F, please bring a fruit dish, like pie, fresh fruit, fruit salad, etc.
--If your SCA name starts with G to L, please bring a main dish, such as roast chicken (get one from the grocery deli!), soups, stews, meat pies, etc.
--If your SCA name starts with M to R, please bring a vegetable side dish, could be anything from a veggie plate to spinach quiche to grains.
--If your SCA name starts with S to Z, please bring a dessert, large loaf of bread, or selection of cheeses.
Remember to bring your own serving dishes & utensils, & mark them with your name or badge so you can find them after the meal. Slow-cookers are OK, but don't plan to cook food on-site.
